Phishing for your identity, are you a target?

Phishing scams, we are all a target when it comes to a phishing scam, just by visiting a website or by receiving an email from someone we do not know, but we do not all have to become a victim of a phishing scam.

Phishing (pronounced as “fishing”) is the activity whereby a person is lured into giving up their personal information. To allow another person to steal their identity and normally to commit fraud.

The most common phishing scams are by email. These phishing emails are sent to a person, which  start with "Dear Valued Customer" and then goes on further to state that the company is updating their records and require you to verify your details. The phishing scam will then direct you to click the link within the email which will then lead you to a website where you will enter your personal information.

  1. Be very suspicious of any emails that contain links from unknown senders or which look like they are from a bank or building society , these are more often than not phishing scams, and the best course of action is to delete them
  2. Be cautious about websites that ask for personal information, i.e. bank details or credit card details, these could be phishing scams.
  3. Make use of internet security software which has the ability to filter phishing emails and filter phishing websites.
